This is a police procedural to end all police procedurals. The professional life of Officer Billy Graves is merciless in pace but rich in characters and incidents that stay in your mind. Richard Price has a winning way with dialog that can turn the grimmest reality to humor and then back to pathos.

Billy was part of an anti-crime unit known as the Wild Geese. While they celebrated their wins, they each deeply rued the suspects — the Whites — who got away with murder. Now a victim has turned up, who was one of those Whites. And that is just the start of a number of very scary events, not only in the city, but also involving the officer's children, father and wife. Billy is going to have to go through a lot to get to the bottom of this, and in the process, he will make some surprising discoveries about himself and his family.

Serving so close to criminals and to the underside of life in New York, investigators have to try hard to keep on the up-and-up, and Price has provided a brilliant story that graphically illustrates this. No wonder the novel has received so many awards.
