Erica Donato is a Brooklyn woman and single mother who is an urban history grad student delving into the 1930s, when Brownsville was the home of organized criminals. She quickly learns that although Brooklyn is rapidly changing, Brownsville is not.

Brownsville is still poor, tough, and breeds fighters and gangs. In pursuit of the history she is researching, Erica meets teen Savanna at a landmark local library. Later, learning that Savannah has been found savagely beaten and left for dead in an empty lot, Erica approaches Savanna's mother and offers emotional support. After a rowdy demonstration, Erica finds a young friend of Savannah's dead.

Erica continues her research and discovers several older ladies who can provide some background from the 1930s. This leads to a disagreement between the ladies. And also provides the readers of Brooklyn Secrets a bird's eye view of Brooklyn in that time.

This is the third in the Brooklyn series by Triss Stein and is well-written with the sense of old-time Brooklyn as well as the neighborhood of today. I found it fascinating and quickly fell into the desire to learn more. A very good read.
