T
he Bone Orchard
is the fifth (following
Massacre Pond
) in Paul Doiron's gritty series starring Maine game warden Mike Bowditch. Having only previously read the second in the series,
Trespasser
, I had some catching up to do.
M
ike is no longer a rookie warden. At this point in the series, frustrated with his constant troubles with his superiors (most of whom consider him '
a know-it-all and a meddler
'), he has left the Maine Warden Service and is working as a fishing guide. That quickly changes after his first sergeant, mentor and supporter, Kathy Frost, gets into trouble.
S
he and newly graduated Dani Tate were called out after disfigured Afghan war veteran Jimmy Gammon '
had barricaded himself inside a horse barn and was threatening to blow his head off with a shotgun.
' Instead he was shot by the wardens, Kathy taking full responsibility. Jimmy's wealthy, politically connected parents immediately threatened lawsuits.
M
ike rushes to Kathy's side - they argue and she's shot by a sniper soon afterwards. You can see where this leads of course. Mike investigates, despite having no official status. Was the sniper attack connected to the Gammon shooting or to a prior case that Kathy was working on? Mike connects with touchy Dani Tate to find out. More violence follows.
I
t turns out that '
Revenge can be a powerful motivator.
'
The Bone Orchard
is another gripping episode in a stellar series, that does a wonderful job of showcasing Maine's scenic beauty. Don't miss it!
