one Cold
is the third (following
Good as Gone
and
Payoff
) in Douglas Corleone's thriller series starring former U.S. Marshal Simon Fisk. Since the disappearance of his daughter Hailey when she was six (twelve years before events here) and his wife's subsequent suicide, he has worked privately to find abducted children.
N
ow, in this third in the series, he finally has evidence (sent by a friend, a former FBI computer scientist) that Hailey might still be alive - and might have committed murder in Dublin, Ireland! Flashbacks (interspersed with the developing story) show what Simon and his wife went through when Hailey first went missing and how they blamed each other.
O
f course, Simon flies to Dublin and starts digging, with some help from DCI Damon Ashdown, his sister's ex and from his sister Zoey, who is quite a raunchy character. They were raised separately and this is the first time they meet as adults. They get into all kinds of trouble together, starting with gangsters (including the '
Pablo Escobar of the UK
') and police in Scotland.
T
hey follow the trail to gun traffickers in Liverpool and on to London, where Simon encounters the last man he wanted to see involved - and finally finds out some of the history behind his daughter's abduction. Simon makes deals with anyone, no matter how crooked, who can assist in his quest - and he does finally find out what happened to Hailey.
Gone Cold
is a fast paced, exciting read.
