I think this is especially evident in The Wet And The Dry: A Drinker's Journey. In this travel journal the author logs astute observations of the varying views of alcohol in different parts of the world. In the Middle East, for example, drinking is frowned upon so much so that it is not permitted. But in the West drinking is a run of the mill daily activity for some. His journey and love of libations leads Osborne to pose some interesting questions. He addresses why and where different societies fall on the alcohol scale: good or bad. Osborne also explores whether or not alcoholic beverages are a sign of sanity, which also leads back to the first question. I enjoyed the complementary combination of the topics of travel and drink. I do enjoy the occasional visit to a pub and vineyard while I'm out and about and this was an eye opening experience to how other parts of the world view these activities. And I now know that should I ever find myself in Oman, especially on New Year's Eve, I might as well forget about the champagne!
