H
umor writer Dave Barry turns an eighth grade trip to the nation's capital into a hilarious outing that involves some well meaning but misguided students who are convinced that the U.S. president is the subject of a bizarre assassination attempt.
W
yatt Palmer and his buddies do everything they possibly can to neutralize the supposed attempt on the president's life even though their heavy handed actions get them in a lot of trouble. Just when you begin to think the entire plot is a figment of the students' imaginations, something happens that totally
forces you to reassess the situation.
A
dults will probably be disappointed in this novel because they are not used to the
flip side
of the famed humorist. That's OK though. Barry is writing for middle school students here and he is thus playing by a different set of literary rules. The story can be totally silly, bizarre and endearingly stupid because that will appeal to this age group.
I
f it works with his intended audience (and it does), this funny tale of intrigue and adolescent bungling and angst will be deemed a success. So congratulations Dave ... it worked!
