Ana Cortez has grown up in foster families in the Los Angeles area after her parents and then grandmother were gunned down by gang members. Ana has had a rough time in the foster care system and the teenager has just about used up all her options.

Perhaps a change of scenery will help so Ana agrees to travel north of San Francisco to a rural community to live and work on a farm owned by a woman and her brother. For a girl from East L.A. who has never even been to the beach, this will move will be quite an adjustment but Ana is willing to give it a try.

Living on the Garber Farm will be a radical departure from Ana's previous life but her hosts, Emmett and Abbie Garber, are in for a big adjustment too so this will be an interesting experiment to say the least.

As she meets some of the local teens and gets into the rhythm of farm life, the young girl realizes that this is actually a place where she can thrive if she is given the chance. Naturally, there will be some complications (like a boyfriend) and obstacles to overcome, but that's what makes this an interesting read.

Although this is categorized as a young adult novel many adults will also find this book enjoyable reading. Those familiar with Anne of Green Gables will recognize where the author's inspiration came from, but Teran does put a different spin on the story and characters.
