That's where we are with this popular British crime series featuring Chief Superintendent Peter Diamond. With grave misgivings, Diamond must accompany his boss on an internal investigation of an officer at a neighboring police branch. Not only does the Chief Superintendent not care for Assistant Chief Constable Georgina Dallymore but the person on the hook is someone Diamond has worked with and respects. To complicate matters, there's a problem with a murder case that sent a man to prison seven years ago (he claims he's not guilty), a teacher and student have vanished from a local school, and there seems to be a cover-up of a rash of missing persons' cases that date back years. Diamond believes somehow all these disparate situations are linked and, as usual, he's right, but the burden of showing how all of this is connected will fall on his shoulders. His go by the book colleague will be little, if any, help! About the only thing Georgina Dallymore is right about is that, given the number of women of all ages, temperaments and positions in this investigation, by the time it is concluded the detective will have had quite an education 'into the ways of women'. 'I don't even suppose you've ever been exposed to such a line-up of females,' Dallymore says. Well, she's spot on about that! It takes Peter Lovesey a while to get this novel rolling, but once it is in motion it will provide plenty of entertainment. Those who have read the other books in the series won't want to miss this one. And if you are wondering about the title, wait until the closing chapters and then I think you'll get it and probably think, 'Oh, how brilliant!'
