After eight previous mysteries, we feel as though we know Faye Longchamp-Mantooth very well. Faye, an archeologist, has lost the desire to uncover artifacts from the very soil of her Florida island – Joyeuse. She has miscarried the child that both she and her husband Joe Mantooth were eagerly awaiting, knowing it would be their last.

She can't get in gear and Joe worries he will lose her to depression. Joe's father arrives – he and Joe have not been close for years and he is fresh from prison. Just one more little detail with which to contend.

Tragically, a close friend who owns the local marina is shot and killed. And there has been illegal dumping of hazardous waste in the waters surrounding Joyeuse. Arsenic has been found in the soil of the island – natural or polluted by man? Their very way of life is threatened.

As always, the newest in the Longchamp-Mantooth series by Mary Ann Evans is a real treat. I would love to see this island, Joyeuse, and spend some time there. Evans does have a way with descriptions. Her plots shine also. A good read.
