Hair of the Dog is the third in the Dan Mahoney mystery series, the first two being Flash Flood and Rollover. Each one is as good a read as the other two.

Dan Mahoney works as an investigator for United Life and Casualty who send him to Florida to look into a fire at the kennels of a Greyhound racing track. Unfortunately, murder is committed at the same time and a handicapped trainer is accused of killing one of the owners of the track. And then, of course, setting the fire to cover up the killing.

Dan, along with his fiancée Elaine, isn't too sure that this poor slow-witted trainer is guilty. They set about trying to prove the police have the wrong man. Dan's mother enters the scene as she arrives to live in Florida with her gentleman friend – but she has some doubts about her main squeeze and asks Elaine to check out his credentials.

Money laundering, witness protected mob figures, dead dogs that really might not be dead, are tangled together with the sun and sand of Florida beaches - and the author's obvious love for the sweet, gentle Greyhounds. One of my daughters had two different rescued Greyhounds at separate times. I can attest to their lovely temperaments. And also to the enjoyment I had reading of them.
