The book opens on an exit from Metropolis Penitentiary. Raymond Dansk has paid his twelve year debt to society. He's determined to go straight and anxious to return to his home town of Smallville. But he makes the mistake of sheltering in a cave, where fluorescent green water drips onto his sleeping form all night long, and awakens the dragon within.

Clark has his usual fantasies of proving himself to Lana but why is she suddenly making overtures to him and dumping Whitney? And what is it that makes Clark believe he's ordinary? It all begins with green mint tea. While their friends and family puzzle over Clark's and Lana's behavior, a wild creature begins to attack the individuals who testified against Dansk ... and Lana's Aunt Nell is one of them.

Pete has a near death experience, and the action builds to its usual violent crescendo at a party that Lex gives for the local teens; it turns out that one of the party animals is a dragon. It's another great mix of intriguing sub-plots, bizarre meteor effects, and the steady development of the young Superman's talents and relationships.
