C. T. Adams' The Exile, first in a new romantic fantasy series, introduces Brianna, daughter of Leu, High King of the Sidhe, and Helena, a powerful human witch. She grew up in the perilous faerie world, but left it with her mother as a teenager. At that time, Helena also cast a powerful spell, making the Veil between the worlds impenetrable to fae magic.

Brianna Hai lives in an apartment above her magic shop, with Pug (a gargoyle) as roommate. Her close friends are Mei (a dragon who can take human form) and gay David Antonelli who works for her in the shop. Trouble enters her life with a new customer, a powerful Sidhe who wants to purchase Pug and lashes out with magic when she hears that he's not for sale.

Meanwhile, David's brother Nick (a cop) is pressured by an FBI agent to get close to Brianna (through his brother) in order to assist their investigation of her activities. Of course, when Nick and Brianna meet, the attraction is strong and mutual - and he's quickly pulled into her world of magical conflict.

They end up (along with David) in the realm of the fae, where Brianna's siblings vie for the succession to the throne and magical duels are fought at the drop of a hat. There are plenty of those, along with betrayals at every turn, as King Leu prepares to meet his fate - and to safeguard the succession.

The story is exciting and surprising and this cliffhanger episode leaves Brianna exiled in the human world (hence the title) with grave new responsibilities, and a horde of dangerous enemies. Great fun.
