is the second in a bestselling German police procedural series starring Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver von Bodenstein to be published in the United States. The first one was
Snow White Must Die
.
T
he story is complex with a variety of intriguing characters and subplots. It begins with the discovery of the brutalized corpse of a sixteen-year-old girl, washed up on the riverbank outside Frankfurt. But what is really odd about the case is that the police are unable to identify her.
E
ssentially this story focuses on a long running international pedophile ring operating at the highest levels of German society, its members ruthlessly using their power to keep their activities secret.
I
n addition to the detectives themselves (who lead credible and engaging private lives) we follow the musings and exploits of Kilian Rothemund, a highly successful lawyer until he was convicted and jailed as a child molester. There is also ambitious TV show host Hanna Herzmann, dubbed
Hanna Heartless
by some of her guests, whom she exploits for drama and good ratings.
H
anna is embroiled in these violent events after her psychotherapist calls her with an
explosive story
. Hanna's daughter Meike, who heartily dislikes her mother, also plays a role, as does Bernd Prinzler, an ex-biker leader who knows Kilian well, and Bernd's wife. And there's a little girl, who rightly fears the
bad wolf
.

is an excellent episode in a series that I plan to follow. If you enjoy complex and thought provoking foreign mysteries, dive into this series. You won't be disappointed.
