Agatha Raisin has done it again. Fallen in love. This time with a new gardener in town, whom she has hired to spruce up her garden. She offers to foot the bill for a charity ball just for the chance to dance with him.

Agatha lives in the English Cotswolds and eligible men aren't found around every corner. She plans a glamorous outfit with teetering heels to match, in order to catch his eye. Unfortunately for her, every other single woman in her town of Parva has the same goal - to have his shoes under her bed. Agatha is disappointed when he doesn't show up for the ball. Even more so when he is found dead with a plastic bag over his head and a poisonous snake sharing that bag.

Agatha changes her ball gown for detective clothes and sets out to solve the mystery of who would kill the most popular man in town. What she discovers is that he had probably bedded most of the women in Parva, as well as in the next village down the road. True to form, Agatha feels jealousy. Why hadn't he graced her bed, for God's sake? But she also feels the thrill of the chase. Her friends rally around but her revulsion for snakes makes her insecure. But she musters on and beats the police to the solution of the gardener's murder.

Agatha once again provides a good read. Flighty and light-hearted, Hiss and Hers by M. C. Beaton will tickle your funny bone as well as make you side with Agatha. She is abrupt, crotchety, unwilling to listen to reason, and tells things as they are with no thought for others' feelings. But there is still something about her that always makes me glad to find another of her adventures on the shelves.
