Rather than a decline, this end marked an emergence into an exciting time for the arts, as many new ideas abounded, and directors and designers were trying out innovative, seemingly outrageous techniques. Burlingame chronicles his part in all of this in Sets, Lights, & Lunacy: A Stage Designer's Adventures on Broadway and in Opera. Sets, Lights, & Lunacy is a good read for any Broadway or Opera aficionado who wants to hear more about many of the big names during the latter half of the 20th century. Sometimes it feels like Burlingame has a tendency to name-drop, but his writing shows that he truly is a contemporary – and often a friend – of these stars and wunderkinds. What fascinated me the most was the little bits of lunacy that he incorporated, although these were never long enough. Still, Lloyd Burlingame's career is highly fascinating for those interested in the performing arts, and Sets, Lights, & Lunacy is a great introduction for anyone pursuing a similar career.
