The Eyes of Aurora – A Fifth Case from the Notebooks of Pliny the Younger by Albert A. Bell, Jr. once again explores the relationship between master and slave.

Gaius Pliny tries unsuccessfully to convince his ailing mother that he does not want to marry the daughter of another of Rome's leading families. What he truly wants – and what neither his mother nor society would accept – is to wed his slave Aurora.

While wrestling with this problem, Aurora befriends Crispina, a woman in dire circumstances who is looking for her husband. Aurora asks Gaius to help her and her young son. When Aurora, Gaius and Gaius' good friend Tacitus travel to the countryside of Rome to find this damsel in distress, they come upon a grisly murder scene. The question arises as to whether Crispina is truly who she pretends to be.

I find this series offers a font of information about the time of the Caesars. This episode takes place shortly after the eruption of Vesuvius, and the setting lends itself well to the skullduggery played out - the togas worn by Romans certainly had many uses.
