I
f you are looking for a collection of dark YA short stories, then
Extremities: Stories of Death, Murder, and Revenge
definitely fits the bill. Known for his lighter works, David Lubar shows he can also handle the shadier and scarier side of fiction.
T
here are thirteen stories within
Extremities
, written over various years, and, as with all story collections, some are better than others. The two that were my absolute favorites were
Feelings
and
Patterns of Fear
.
Feelings
had the feel of a full-blown novel even though it was only thirty pages and
Patterns of Fear
was a solid – and chilling – ghost story. These two stories really stand out and make the whole volume worth it. On the other end of the spectrum,
Free Seas
packed no punch, and made me wonder if this was one of Lubar's early works, as it has a very freshman feel.
O
verall,
Extremities
is a wonderful collection, especially if you are looking for some death, murder, or revenge. Hopefully, David Lubar will write a YA novel in this genre, as he has proved his adeptness.
