Like the author, her heroine is a sex-crimes prosecutor. As the novel opens, Anna is dining with chief homicide prosecutor, African-American Jack Bailey - he had long desired a long-term commitment, though she had been reluctant. They get engaged, which will make his six-year-old daughter Olivia very happy. While this goes on, a brothel is being raided by police just after a gang led by a man called Diablo went on a gory rampage through the premises. Diablo's skin is covered in dark hieroglyphs and he has two horns, surgically implanted in his forehead. After officer Hector Ramos enters the brothel, shots are fired. A perp is killed but Diablo escapes. Ramos ends up on administrative leave, but continues to investigate. One of the gang members, who is captured, has in his possession a photo of Jack Bailey's wife, Nina Flores, a police officer who was shot while working undercover. In addition to the brothel case, Anna starts looking into Nina Flores' murder, and learns that the woman had been greenlighted (that is, her death ordered) by the gang that raided the brothel. While all this goes on, Anna makes wedding preparations. Then she learns that she too has been greenlighted. Jack goes berserk. Anna does stop the gang, with help from her friend, FBI Agent Samantha Randazzo and a confidential informant who seeks redemption. But there are close calls before it's all over, as well as a devastating surprise for Anna, who has a tough decision to make. Fans of legal mysteries will appreciate Speak of the Devil.
