Sorrow Bound    by David Mark Order:  USA  Can Penguin, 2014 (2014) Hardcover, CD, e-Book      Reviewed by Hilary Williamson Sorrow Bound is the third in David Mark's quirky police procedural series starring Detective Sergeant Aector McAvoy, a member of the Serious and Organized Crime Unit in Hull, England. It's probably best to read the earlier episodes before this one, in order to understand the back stories of the very different characters. McAvoy, a 'gentle, humble, shy giant of a man', adores his young wife Roisin, whom he saved years before from an attack by several young men. They have two very small children. Aector is having obligatory therapy with psychologist Sabine Keane after a previous case - he is not very cooperative. His new boss Trish Pharaoh has 'biker boots, mascara, and truckloads of attitude'. They work well together. Which is a good thing as they are up against a killer who is targeting several good Samaritans, ordinary people, and killing them in horrific ways. Eventually the police find a link to a serial rapist, but this is in no way a copycat crime. The perp ended up in an asylum, crippled by a victim's husband - and continued to do harm. While this investigation develops, local violence escalates. A ruthless figure with seemingly limitless access to information has taken over the drug trafficking on the East Coast. Readers get the inside track on how he operates as they watch him compromise a good cop. Then Roisin has a run-in with one of the gang members - will Aector be able to protect her (and his children) this time? This episode culminates in a crescendo of violence, with two separate incidents involving Aector and those he loves. Series fans will be keen to find out how the survivors are coping in the next book in the series. Don't miss Sorrow Bound, a nicely convoluted mystery with flawed but very human characters.
