Ava Oosterling is a candy shop owner in Fishers' Harbor on the shores of Lake Michigan, in Door County, Wisconsin. Her specialty is fudge – particularly different and exotic flavors. The shop's name is more than explicit as to what the shop carries – Oosterling's Live Bait, Bobbers and Belgian Fudge and Beer.

To publicize their small village, she has suggested a Fudge Fest, where three acknowledged pastry chefs vie for the title of Winner. Hoping for more business for her small shop, which she shares with her grandpa, Ava is one hundred per cent behind the Festival, which grows into quite an enterprise. She also plans to win the fudge contest.

All sorts of difficulties arise but the worst of them is a note threatening her if she wins. Most of the men in and around Fishers' Harbor consider Ava a looker, and have set their caps for her hand. A touch of romance regularly sneaks into the story (author Christine DeSmet is also a romance writer) to keep Hot Fudge Frame Up readers on their toes.

One of the fudge judges takes a fatal fall from the lighthouse tower. Ava is battered and bruised on several occasions. Lucky Harbor, a fudge-brown Belgian Water Spaniel, plays a rather large and important role for a dog. And rightly so. Great reading for beach time.
