Evil in the First House: A Starlight Detective Agency Mystery    by Mitchell Scott Lewis Order:  USA  Can Poisoned Pen, 2014 (2014) Hardcover, Softcover, CD, e-Book      Reviewed by Mary Ann Smyth Although I am not into astrology, I thoroughly enjoyed Evil in the First House by Mitchell Scott Lewis. This well-written and intriguing novel is the third in the Starlight Detective Agency mysteries. David Lowell is an astrologer detective who uses his expertise in reading an individual's chart to more or less predict who that person is and of what he or she is capable. This concept makes for a wonderful plot that will keep your attention and possibly make you a convert. Dr. Ethan Williamson comes to Lowell for his help. He is father to twins – one of whom he raised; the other raised by his estranged wife. The reasoning for the twins' separation is flawed as far as Lowell is concerned. But the father's son has a failing kidney. The doctor wants Lowell to track down his wife and convince her to allow the other twin to donate a kidney to his brother. Lowell discovers that the father is not thought of highly in the medical community. But the fatally ill boy deserves a chance to live. He does his charts and is not too happy with his reckoning but agrees to hunt down the second twin and his mother. The plot goes along with the hunt for the missing persons. It is enlivened by speculation as to what Williamson is up to. Also by the world of astrology. While I may not understand it fully, I found this information very interesting. The stars, according to Lowell, do not predict a happy ending. He feels he is missing something but can't put his finger on it. The denouement will shock and horrify you. I kind of had it figured out but that didn't lessen the impact of the ending of a really good book.
