In An Air of Treason, P. F. Chisolm takes readers on a trip back in time to 1592, when Queen Elizabeth is making a state visit to Oxford. Sir Robert Carey, whom we have met in previous books in this series, is trying to make contact with the Queen to obtain a warrant and fee as Deputy Warden of the West March with Scotland. He desperately needs the fee to pay the men who marched with him.

Instead of paying her debt, Elizabeth orders him to investigate the thirty-year old death of Amy Dudley. The young woman was the unloved wife of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Her death, at that time, was ruled an accident – she had fallen down a flight of steps and broken her neck. But even then, there were questions about these findings. In 1592 there are still questions and the Queen wants the answers.

Robert Carey is felled by a dose of belladonna and left temporarily blind. Sergeant Dodd, who guards Carey's back, has disappeared on the road to London! Just at a time when Carey could really use his help.

Was Amy murdered? And Why? Why were the true facts of Amy's death swept under the rug? Was Robert Dudley having a dalliance with the Queen? Will Carey finally receive the fee he earned? Will he live to clear the mystery of Amy Dudley's death? Will Dodd reunite with Carey?

Don't miss this latest episode in the life of Robert Carey. It's too good to miss. A stellar story and the historical details take the reader quickly back in time. Makes me glad I live today.
