The creator of Law & Order, Dick Wolf, began a new series with The Intercept, which received rave reviews from The Washington Post, The New York Times, Kirkus Reviews to name but a few.

Now, Wolf picks up the pieces and continues the story of Jeremy Fisk, a detective with NYPD's Intelligence Division of the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Drug cartels in Mexico are taking over the country and Fisk arrives there when twenty-three beheaded bodies are found on the border between the U.S. and Mexico. The head of the Mexican Intelligence Agency is Cecelia Garza, who has had to fight hard to attain her rank. Thirty-five years old, she is respected for her intensity and dedication to her job.

United Nations week means an upsurge in security for New York City. Complacency about the new systems put in order collapses when a dozen people are found beheaded in Rockaway. Garza's task is to protect Mexico's President. This only complicates the huge job that Fisk undertakes while he is still grieving for his late partner and lover.

The tension builds slowly at first but escalates quickly and continues at breakneck speed 'til the denouement, and then continues to the last page. One hopes that Fisk and Garza will become involved, but I imagine Wolf is holding that for the next wonderful addition to the series. There will be one, won't there, Mr. Wolf?

The interaction and jealousy between various law and order agencies is brought to the front in The Execution, and makes one wonder how anything helpful ever gets done.
