A young woman's quest to discover her origins is thwarted at every turn, even though the answers are readily available. Abi Maxwell sets her novel in an out-of-the-way place in New Hampshire. There is an island out there, out of which legends have grown, and in this story several generations appear, all ancestors of Alice, who as a baby was found in a canoe.

The story skips among the generations, making it at times difficult to discover who we are reading about. There is quite a bit for Alice to untangle, and since the community is very closed-mouthed in a certain way and very gossipy in another, Alice often has to make do with innuendo and indirection.

This is a story of secrets that appeals not only through the narrative but also through the author's ability to portray the unusual atmosphere surrounding it.
