Reel Stuff by Don Bruns is the latest in Bruns' Stuff series. I have read all six of the previous episodes and enjoyed each and every one.

The plot is a good 'un. An actor, in the process of filming a scene for a Miami-based TV show, takes a dive off a seven-story scaffold. The script called for him to make that dive, but he was to aim for the inflated cushion that was to break his fall. Somehow he missed his target.

Was it suicide? Did he slip on a slippery surface? Or, horrors, could it be murder? A lot of insurance money was involved here. His girlfriend told everyone that they were going to be married. Except there was a little blip that might have prevented that. He was already married! To his girlfriend's sister!!

Private investigators James Lessor and Skip Moore of Moore or Less Investigations take on the case, hoping to earn enough money to stay in business. They are not the most adept of investigators or businessmen. They bumble along, but usually manage to come out on top. I loved that Skip's girlfriend Emily goes underground to sniff around a little and ends up being discovered to act in another show! The land of make-believe just doesn't seem to fit with the reality of murder.

The characters fit their parts well. The dialogue flows. So what went wrong? I don't honestly know. But when I finished the last page, I didn't feel as though I had read a Don Bruns mystery. I did enjoy it and can recommend it. Just felt a little let down.
