Frank Mederos was born in Cuba under Fidel Castro's regime. His grandfather taught Frank to fish, navigate the seas and to think for himself, which had a great impact on his life.

As Frank grew up, Castro's dealings with Cuba's people became more and more militaristic and autocratic. Frank was sent, with many other young people, to help the poor bring in their crops, with no pay and awful living conditions.

Then Frank met the girl he determined would one day be his bride. Her family applied for visas to leave Cuba. He wanted to leave with them. But Castro had other plans. Frank was taken into the army along with his friends and cousins.

He had to come up with other ways to leave Cuba behind. His first two attempts had to be jettisoned. The third was successful. Did he find his love in the United States? We'll have to read a sequel to The Boy Who Said No by Patti Sheehy to find out if his romantic dream came true. (A sequel is yet to be written.)

This story is touted as a 'True Life Novel'. Frank told his story to Sheehy and she put it to paper. The novel is simply written. The subject captures the heart as does Frank with his determination to join his love. An engrossing tale.
