Set in Brazil, this series featuring Chief Inspector Mario Silva certainly doesn't lack for action. The multiple investigations Silva oversees take him from Sao Paolo, where a suicide bomber attacks the American Consulate, to the border with Paraguay, where an attempt is made on the police inspector's life.

While chasing down the source of the terrorist's supply of explosives, Silva and his staff are also ordered to investigate the shooting of a candidate for governor in Curitiba. A former associate of the inspector was in charge of the dead man's security and is killed while recovering from his own wounds while in the hospital.

If this weren't enough for Silva to digest, he is being secretly tracked and being set up for a hit by a disgruntled criminal who seeks revenge because of an investigation the detective oversaw that resulted in a conviction for killing a priest.

Leighton Gage manages to skillfully bring these seemingly disparate plot strains together in an acceptable manner which maintains the novel's credibility. This is a series that not only offers an armchair tour of Brazil and explains some of the country's turbulent history with its neighbor, Paraguay, but also features a likeable set of characters whom you'll want to know more about.

Here's a fun way to learn a little about Brazil and get a sense of the vast country before the upcoming Soccer World Cup and Summer Olympics. There are five previous novels in the series but you'll have plenty of time to get caught up if you start reading now!
