She works in an art gallery where a woman has brought a small, carved wooden bird to be appraised, a firebird from an old Russian fable. When Nicola touches the carving, she sees something that piques her curiosity. She decides to find out all she can about the wooden bird, but first she must enlist help from a man who has the gift too. Together they follow a trail through history and the life of a girl named Anna. Anna's journey takes them through war, rebellion and the beautiful Russian courts. It is filled with love, heartbreak, family and redemption. As Rob and Nicola follow this quest together, they discover that their lives are quite similar and end up closer than ever. What an intriguing read, flipping through the pages of past and present. The author takes readers back and forth with such ease that you know she did her homework and very well at that. Anna's story has you empathizing with life's difficulties in that time period and wanting more. I have always been a fan of time travel stories and this one does not disappoint in the least.
