L
ivingston Manor in England, the setting for
The Last Camellia
, is the site of much unhappiness. First there is the tragic death of Lady Anna and all those women who just simply disappear. Then there is the Middlebury Pink, a very rare camellia that Flora must find - and steal! - to save her family from financial ruin.
T
hat was then; now Addison, an American landscape designer, who has painful secrets of her own, tries to escape them by accompanying her husband to the place his parents have recently purchased, and finds that Livingston Manor's tormented past is even more compelling than her own.
R
eaders of this tale must pay close attention since author Sarah Jio has chosen to cut from one time period to the other very quickly, maybe too quickly on occasion. There are many characters, and they are all well handled. But even though the story gets to be fairly gripping, this reader wonders about certain characters' motivation, and the plausibility of some of the action. Never mind, it is a pretty good yarn.
