T
he Good Cop
follows
The Girl Next Door
as the fourth in Brad Parks' cozy mystery series starring idealistic Newark Eagle-Examiner investigative reporter Carter Ross.
T
his time, he's reporting on a dead, black Newark cop, Detective Sergeant Darius Kipps. Carter manages to talk to the grieving widow, Noemi Kipps, who has a five month old son. The dead cop sounds '
like a heck of a guy
' and it makes a great story. But then Carter's gorgeous editor Tina Thompson (their relationship has been strained lately) cans it - according to the cops, it was suicide.
B
ut this story just doesn't make sense, especially after Carter talks to his friend Pritch and learns that word is out that '
Kipps might have been dirty
', that he recently had contact with Internal Affairs. But Kipps' partner and close friend, Mike Fusco, vehemently denies that rumor, and other details of the suicide do not match the victim's character.
S
o Carter talks to Uncle Bernie (of Gene and Bernie's Warranty Emporium), whom he's assured knows which cops are dirty - Kipps was not. And as always, he enlists one of the newspaper's enthusiastic interns, Geoff '
Ruthie
' Ginsburg. It's Ruthie who alerts Carter to Red Dot Enterprises - but unfortunately the villains of the piece are aware of the duo's interest.
I
t's an unusual mystery, all about good cops ... and bad cops. Carter Ross only survives by the skin of his teeth, and with a little help from colorful new friends. I hope we'll see more of them!
