I came across a Lisa Scottoline novel that I hadn't read. Can't believe I let one slip by me. Her mysteries always keep me in suspense and I love her wonderful sense of humor.

With Come Home, she explores motherhood and a relationship that can be built between stepmother and stepdaughters. One that really can't be broken even in its darkest moments. Speaking of motherhood, a friend tells her how to handle it with humor and a cattle prod!

Jill Farrow has recently gotten a divorce from her second husband (the first one died). When her husband stormed out of the house, he took his two daughters (her stepdaughters) with him and cut all ties between them.

Abby, one of his daughters, finds him dead, of what police decide was too many pills and alcohol. But Abby is sure he was murdered and wants Jill to prove it. Turns out the ex was into some nefarious schemes that made him a very wealthy man. Jill knows she has no business trying to do what the police are trained to do. But she can't deny Abby, whom she still loves as her own.

Her current fiancé loves her but doesn't like her involvement with the stepdaughters. Could this break up their plans for the future? It seems to me he capitulates a little too easily, but who am I to question Scottoline? Come Home is a really good story and one a mother can understand.
