Frederick Ramsay has three mystery series going. I can personally recommend each and every one The Jerusalem Mysteries, the Ike Schwartz Mysteries and the Botswana Mysteries. Holy Smoke is the third in the Jerusalem Mysteries. If you've read the first two, you will welcome Gamaliel, the Rabban of the Sanhedrin, back into your life while picking up the new developments in his.

If you haven't read either of the first two books, never fear. You can pick up his life very easily and fall into the story. It is 29 C.E. and the Romans are still in charge of Jerusalem, ruling most times with an iron fist. A badly scorched body has been found in the most sacred place on earth for the Jews. Gamaliel is the ranking rabbi in all of Judea and it falls to him to identify the body, discover who is responsible for the person's death and why it happened. He reveals a scheme of intrigue and murder that he must solve

Holy Smoke gives the reader a feel for what life was like so very far back in time as well as an insight into an ancient religion. A good read.
