A
uthor Ed Ifkovic brings us another in his mystery series featuring yesterday's stars and celebrities. With
Make Believe
, he takes us back to 1951. Senator Joseph McCarthy is conducting his witch-hunt for communists in Hollywood. Edna Ferber has traveled to Hollywood in support of her friend Max Jeffries who has been accused of having Communist sympathies.
E
dna meets Ava Gardner, who at that time is having an affair with Frank Sinatra, much to the annoyance of gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. While Edna is negotiating with a movie studio about her novel
Show Boat
, she befriends Ava and grows to like the glamorous woman. Unfortunately, Edna's dear and gentle friend Max is found dead and it appears that Sinatra is to be accused of his murder.
T
his series is an absolute delight. I grew up when these people were household names. Not only was this an intriguing story, a well-written mystery, but it also brought back a lot of delightful and comforting memories.
