Scarlet Wenderoth is devastated by her older brother's death. She withdraws from the Catalina Island community where she grew up and spends her time riding her mare, Delilah. Riding isn't her only way of coping. She has rituals, including a diary in which she records her daily calories. She also gets relief by cutting herself. Her parents are grieving too and they don't notice her withdrawal from friends or how skinny she's become.

When school starts in the fall, Scarlet knows she'll have to face everyone she's been avoiding, including her boyfriend Andy. Will Cohen, a newcomer to the island, changes things. Scarlet sees Will for the first time when she almost runs him down while riding Delilah. Scarlet would like to ignore him, but whenever they're in the same room, she can't keep her eyes away from him.

Will is drawn to Scarlet. He feels the need to protect her and even keep her from harming herself. The pull she has for him is part of a secret he will later share with her. Will's future has already been decided and he's afraid that he'll be putting Scarlet in danger if they stay together. A little magic keeps this sweet romance from being ordinary.
