T
he Doctor of Thessaly
is the third (following
The Messenger of Athens
and
The Taint of Midas
in Anne Zouroudi's quirky
Seven Deadly Sins
mystery series. Episodes are set on the Greek islands and feature Hermes Diaktoros. This well-bred, manicured fat man, who wears gleaming white canvas tennis shoes, is an appealing investigator, who follows a higher authority to see justice done.
T
he novel opens in Morfi, Greece where middle aged Chrissa Kalgi (one of two ugly sisters) has been jilted at the altar by Dr. Louis Chabrol, a French physician who settled on the island. Then the good - or perhaps not so good - doctor is found blinded in an isolated churchyard. That's when our unusual investigator, Hermes Diaktoros, shows up on the scene and starts digging into relevant events.
H
ermes talks to all involved, helps those whose intentions are good (like the keen young mayor), and deals with those who are not, by manipulating events in his own subtle fashion. As always with a
Seven Deadly Sins
mystery, folk are not what they initially seem to be, the punishment fits the crime, and the crime is not what shows on the surface. Don't miss this engaging series!
