The New New Rules    by Bill Maher Order:  USA  Can Plume, 2012 (2011) Hardcover, Softcover, CD, e-Book     Reviewed by Bob Walch If you are a fan of Bill Maher you know his edgy humor can be not only outrageously funny but the host of HBO's Real Time also has a knack for deflating the pompous politicians and entertainment folks who take themselves too seriously. In this newly released trade paperback, Maher shares his latest collection of political riffs and savagely humorous suggestions for preserving sanity in an insane world. Individuals, groups, politicians, religious leaders, the rich and famous, as well as the not so rich and famous, are the targets of Maher's scathing New New Rules. These observations, which tackle as many sacred cows as the comic can line up in a row, are arranged alphabetically. For example, under 'A' the All Shallows Eve entry reads: 'Halloween must replace July Fourth as our National Holiday. Forget fireworks. Any day that combines spoiling children, corrosive food, and superstition says everything about this country anyone needs to know.' Or try this one on for size: 'If one of your news organization's headlines is about who got kicked off Dancing with the Stars last night, you're no longer a news organization. Sort of like, if you were on Dancing with the Stars last night, you're no longer a star.' Not everyone appreciates Bill Maher's brand of humor but if you are one of those who find him funny, you'll find this book a hoot!
