It has two leads. Jane Ryland, once a Channel 11 news star with a promising future, was disgraced after she identified grocery magnate Arthur Vick as the John in a sex-for-hire case and then refused to reveal a source when he responded with a million dollar libel suit. He won and Jane was fired. Now she has a new job, writing puff pieces for the Register newspaper. Detective Jake Brogan believes he has a serial killer on his hands - is a Bridge Killer targeting the city's young women? Jane and Jake know each other, very well. But they have avoided a serious relationship, because of the problems that would ensue in their respective jobs - their superiors wouold always suspect them of sharing secrets. Governor Owen Lassiter is campaigning for Senator. We see two women (vengeful Kenna and obsessed Holly) manipulate situations to get close to him - who are they really and why do they do this? And why is Lassiter's wife Moira unavailable to the press? Jane is determined to find out. Her life gets even more complicated when her source turns up as the latest Bridge Killer's victim.
