Jamie is sent to the Hermitage House for Children when his mother dies in a car accident. His last memory of her is a drunken rant about how she should never have given him the last six years of her life. He doesn't understand why she says six years when he is twelve years old. The last six years of his life have been spent moving from town to town and living in dreary apartments. Beyond that, he has no memory.

The Hermitage house isn't the worse place he's lived. Mother Catherine (who runs the house) is a good woman and so are her helpers. Jamie makes a good friend in Antonio.

Later he begins having dreams. Dreams about a family. In his dream family, Jamie is the blond haired son. There is a mother – but not the mother who died in the car crash - a father, little sister and even a dog. Mother Catherine worries that these wistful dreams won't prepare him for the future.

Malcolm Alter is a special education teacher and wresting coach who writes nonfiction comic books for children. This is his first novel.
