ddie Perlmutter is a former Boston detective, now retired and living in Boca Raton, Florida. He has a great girlfriend who reminds him of Halle Berry, plenty of friends, and one too many cases. His private investigation firm just keeps making headlines. Why wouldn't it? Eddie, aka the
Boca Knight
, has taken down Russian counterfeiters, Neo-Nazis and assorted other bad guys. Local citizens, not to mention the CNN and every newspaper in the state of Florida, can't seem to get enough of Eddie's brand of no nonsense justice.
A
s the story opens an old Boston nemesis of Eddie's asks for a favor; that Eddie shut down the pill mills responsible for the death of his granddaughter. Eddie doesn't really trust the guy, but he decides to look into it. There's also the matter of a financial scammer who's made literally billions duping trusting clients. But how to prove that this wheeler-dealer is pulling off the planet's biggest pyramid scheme? And there's the case of a homeless man attacked at a local church. Plenty to keep Eddie and his two assistants busy, if they don't get blown up, shot at, or knifed to death first.
T
his is my first foray into Eddie Perlmutter's world and it won't be my last. I loved everything about this sexagenarian crime fighter from his dark wit, steely reserve, and often-questionable contacts and tactics, to his ongoing conversations with Mr. Johnson - who's been letting Eddie down in the romance department. Crackling with clever and often irreverent dialogue,
Boca Daze
hits all the right notes, from its cast of quirky characters to its nifty, nicely paced and timely storyline.
