Pru Marlowe is an animal behaviorist who has the ability to commune with cats and most other animals. When she recieves a call that there has been a feline shooting, she is upset that anyone would shoot a cat. She is even more indignant when she discovers that the cat is not shot. The cat has shot its person! Not so! Can't be.

Fluffy is a gorgeous white Persian with blue eyes and is apparently deaf. Pru hears animals talk to her and they in turn can understand what she is thinking. A trifle disconcerting until one thinks about how cool that would be – to be able to know what your animal is thinking. Or maybe not. Think about it.

Anyway, Pru is told that Fluffy will be euthanized because she is now so traumatized, no one can get near her. She had been in the room where her person was murdered. We learn that Fluffy's person has, indeed, been shot. Soon another murder occurs. And Pru herself is run off the road and injures her wrist.

What is going on? Cats Can't Shoot by Clea Simon is a cleverly written plot starring a with-it protagonist. Pru encounters a number of old boyfriends who all play a part in the story. She handles them as the occasion arises. Especially a certain police detective. A clever premise that works.
