O
pening a new series featuring Dr. Claire Waters, a forensic psychiatrist who is haunted by an event that occurred in her childhood, this novel marks the debut of two men who have made their marks in the television field.
N
eal Baer is the Executive Producer of
A Gifted Man
and has also worked on
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
and
ER
. His co author, Jonathan Greene, was a writer and Co-Executive Producer on
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
and also works with Baer on
A Gifted Man
.
I
f this first foray into print reads a little like a script for a movie production it is because it was undoubtedly written with that end in mind. Coping with her own personal demons (she was unable to keep a childhood friend from being kidnapped), Claire is working with some '
hard cases
' at New York City's Rikers Island.
T
odd Quimby, a sex offender, is receiving a certain amount of professional attention from Claire who is drawn to
untreatable
patients, who seem to have no conscience or fear. A savvy Quimby uses reverse psychology to con his psychiatrist, which makes for some interesting sessions.
O
f course once released, a series of ugly serial killings suggest that Quimby isn't
all better
! But, then again perhaps he's not responsible for the atrocities. We'll have to see. Toss in a homicide cop who has his own problems and little time for psychiatrists and you have a volatile mix.
P
lenty of misdirection and some surprising twists make this a fast read, although it is one that has received mixed reviews. While some folks found it quite satisfying, others, perhaps more demanding suspense fans, were lukewarm in their praise. I'd side with those who were less than enthusiastic about this novel.
