Dear Laurie,

This review is in letter form because of the concluding one that Maurice sent you, a letter written by a person who believed as a child that he could neither read nor write. Yours is most definitely a memoir from the soul. As you detail so well, Maurice was one of the invisible poor and abandoned roaming New York City's hard streets. Thank you for stopping, and thank you for the divine internal hand that guided you. You had to be oh so careful lest someone think you had ill intent toward this child or he towards you. Despite the risks, you made friends with a twelve-year-old street kid, saved his life, and gave yours incredible meaning. Back and forth, you weave your own abusive childhood into Maurice's tale.

I am sorry for the abuse you and your family suffered at the hands of your alcoholic father. I'm sorry your mother clung to the old ways of burying the family problem. It killed your brother but made you strong enough to intervene and save Maurice. I congratulate your wisdom as an adult to look back and recognize what happened and why. Thank God for the shelters and intervention available today. Even now, the abused often lapse back because they see no way out and are too poor and uneducated to support a family. My ten years as a single parent counselor taught me that. Your book details an incredible journey and how it affected two lives. Also, it is well enough written that the reader will read to the end. Thank you,

Carrol Wolverton
