Mollie Katzen is the author of Moosewood Cookbook and Vegetable Heaven. Not only are her books chock full of great recipes, but she also advocates good nutrition and includes gentle suggestions that can set you on the right path to good health. Katzen feels that 'breakfast is the first meal of the rest of our lives'. Her luscious cookbook is packed full of breakfast ideas and recipes that should convince you to rearrange your day to make time for this 'cheerful, important meal'.

The author puts forth a great argument for consumption of a morning repast. The excuse that you haven't time doesn't work here. She advises you how to eat well even on your hectic schedule. The right breakfast will keep your energy and focus steady all day. Mollie Katzen's Sunlight Café starts off with a well written intro. Don't skip it. Then on to both Pantry Notes and Equipment Notes. I especially like the tip about a heat absorber for cooking whole grains.

It never occurred to me that there could be as many breakfast choices as Katzen suggests - Gazpacho for instance? Why not? Read the recipe. Bet you'll get out the old blender. I've never fixed Roasted Fruit - but that is the first thing I'm going to try. I've made many scones in my career as a housewife and mother - but never corn scones! A definite must. Lemon Glazed Rosemary/Lavender Raisin Bars! Wow!

This is a tough cookbook to review. There is so much to comment on. The recipes are mouthwatering and many of them portable to eat on the run - or at your desk later in the morning. Each section from Beverages through to Breakfast Bars is laced with suggestions and information about the recipes, and also is graced with one of Katzen's beautiful illustrations. With 292 pages, you're sure to find new and different ideas for breakfasts, and ways to spice up what you're already eating. No more breakfast blahs.

Mollie Katzen's Sunlight Café is a must for your cookbook shelf and would also make a marvelous holiday gift.
