A
s I expected, Sandra Parshall's
Under the Dog Star
is another good read from Poisoned Pen Press. If you've read her three previous mysteries,
Heat of the Moon
being the last one, you will remember that Dr. Rachel Goddard runs her own veterinary clinic. If you haven't read
Heat of the Moon
, why not?
I
n this fourth of the series, the waiting room at the clinic is covered with posters for missing dogs. Tom, Assistant Chief of Police and Rachel's housemate, is sure the missing dogs are being used as bait to train fighting dogs. Not an unusual sport in their neck of the woods of Mason County, Virginia.
A
local physician is killed by the leader of a pack of feral dogs. Who could have set the dog on the doctor? The man's family is extremely dysfunctional, but that certainly shouldn't be the cause for such a savage death. Rachel and her friend Molly are determined to rescue the feral dogs before an armed group of men shoot them all.
U
nder the Dog Star
is exciting and I found myself holding my breath, quickly reading and turning pages to see what happens next to the well-fleshed-out characters. As I said at the beginning of this review, this is a good read.
