The Nature of Wonder, third volume of the Hatter M graphic novel series, finds Hatter Madigan in an alternate USA during the Civil War.

Hatter may be a better soldier than the Confederates he is facing, but his weapons and armor are wearing down and he must transverse the country to find a haberdasher who can make the necessary repairs with magical caterpillar silk. Of course, he is still searching for the lost Alyss Heart and, through the healing of a Native American shaman, the reader gets to see some of the Hatter's past when he is placed in a dream state to recover from an exploding airship.

This was an intense volume as Hatter Madigan feels he is getting closer to his goals as he meets more and more people who are open to, or know of, White Imagination. However, as his quest is far from over, Beddor leaves plenty open for volume four.

While the story is intriguing and really carries the work, I cannot say the same about the artwork. Makkonen's dark and loose style leaves some panels feeling unfinished and characters looking inconsistent. It is edgy, which helps with the mood of the story, but these are not pages that the reader wants to get lost in, like the type of graphics in most fantasies.

The Nature of Wonder is a must-read for those who have been following Hatter M or are fans of Frank Beddor's Looking Glass Wars. On its own, it is an interesting work, but the artwork definitely caters to a specific audience.
