I
can think of quite a few middle grade books aimed at boys that make learning history fun, but no titles for girls spring to mind. Bianca Turetsky's
The Time-Traveling Fashionista on Board the Titanic
changes that with a magical tale of fashion, pre-teen angst, and the Titanic.
L
ouise Lambert is constantly ridiculed by her friends and family, who just do not understand her appreciation of vintage clothing. With the big junior high dance approaching, both Louise's mother and her best friend Brooke are urging her to pick a new dress from Macy's. Louise, after receiving a mysterious invitation to the
Traveling Fashionista Vintage Sale
, has other ideas. At the sale, she finds the most amazing rose pink gown that she simply must have. After a little prodding, the sale proprietors, Marla and Glenda, let her try it on - and that is when she is transported almost a hundred years into the past to find herself aboard the Titanic (although it takes her quite a while to figure out the name of the ship) as the teenaged actress Miss Baxter.
L
ouise's journey makes for a fun story of history and self-discovery. Never satisfied with what she looks like, Louise learns a lot about herself during her time as the stunning Miss Baxter, which leads to the time of growth typical for a seventh-grader. This age-appropriateness is evident throughout
The Time-Traveling Fashionista
as Turetsky definitely knew her target audience. She wrote in a manner easily comprehensible to this age group without getting too old as some middle grade novels can do. But what really makes
The Time-Traveling Fashionista
stand out are Sandra Suy's stunning illustrations of period dresses that really bring the history to life.
T
he Time-Traveling Fashionista
is a very fun novel that brings history to life through gorgeous fashion. I am hoping from the way it ended (although not a cliffhanger by any means) that Bianca Turetsky is planning future adventures featuring special pieces from the
Traveling Fashionista Vintage Sale
- this would make a wonderful series.
