Graf McDonald is traveling down a dark deserted road. His GPS isn't working and he is heading for a July the 4th party at his sire's house. But so far the night hasn't been going as planned. A deer runs out into the road and Graf swerves to avoid hitting it, not wanting damage done to his car. Swearing and madder than hell, he spies an old gas station. Little does he know, he has just entered the town of Penance, where for the last five years no one enters and no one leaves.

Penance townsfolk dislike strangers, considering they have been isolated for so long. Graf runs into a girl named Jessa at the gas station. She is running away from something, something big and dangerous. She is very frightened of this terrorizing beast, and has found protection in Graf. Jessa seems to be the only one in Penance to whom Graf can turn and trust.

The town seems to be out to get Jessa, especially an old boyfriend. Things are getting out of hand, and finding out Graf is a vampire just tops it all off. As Jessa and Graf get to know one another, trust builds and they team up together. Graf is finding out he no longer wants to kill Jessa but maybe kiss her instead. Jessa is getting emotionally attached to Graf and his dark mysterious ways. The town wants a sacrifice, and Jessa is the target. Jessa has some hope that Graf can save her from this small town of doom.

It's a feisty type of book, filled with strange doings. You are hooked right from the beginning. These two characters Graf and Jessa, blend well together - from hate at first sight and raised emotions throughout the story, until love wins out. Action flies through the pages as you hope for the best for Jessa and Graf. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves something different in romance reading.
