In her breezy introduction, Russo says the sandwich is 'a remarkable culinary invention: it's satisfying, fast, comforting, and portable'. She goes on to explain that people are downright passionate about sandwiches which 'typically have deep cultural, ethnic and geographical roots'. In fact, the definition of sandwiches and what they are actually resulted in a lawsuit in 2006 between Panera Bread Company and Qdoba Mexican Grill. Ultimately, the Massachusetts courts ruled that burritos, wraps and tacos are not part of the sandwich family!

The Encyclopedia of Sandwiches regurgitates many of our favourites like the Bologna sandwich, the BLT, the Chicken sandwich, the Dagwood, the Reuben, the Classic Club and of course everybody's fav, the Grilled Cheese sandwich. There are also interesting new concoctions you'll want to try like the Chow Mein sandwich, the Jucy Lucy, Kofta Pockets, the Muffinwich, and the Oyster Loaf. Or maybe the Pound Cake sandwich, the Potato Chip sandwich and the Primanti, which has just about everything on it, including a side of fries! There are even a couple of over-the-top sandwich inventions whose ingredients will put a hitch in your heart before you take that first sinful bite - like the Spaghetti sandwich, the Toasted Chocolate sandwich and the All-in-One Breakfast Sandwich.

The Encyclopedia of Sandwiches is a must for any sandwich lover and really, who doesn't love sandwiches? The book's handy size, alphabetized format, plentiful colour photos and easy-to-follow instructions make this a perfect little volume to keep around your kitchen - or would make a great gift for sandwich loving family members or friends.
