Jenny Jameson was a starry-eyed young girl the first time she encountered two mythical mermen along a secluded beach. One was an injured boy and the other a menacing adult who quickly whisked the child back into the depths of the sea. For years thereafter Jenny returned to that same spot, but her mer-boy never returned despite the strange dreams they shared almost every night.

Now a grown woman and marine biologist, Jenny has little time for fantasy. She's far too busy trying to fight those within her family's secretive corporation intent on capturing human and mythical creatures and harvesting or genetically altering their special abilities for their own sinister purpose. When an investigation into the brutal death of a mermaid reveals that Jenny's trusted associate is not who he seems, she finds herself rescued and reunited with Perrin, the mer-boy from years before.

Exiled from the sea and from his role as Guardian - one of the very few within his Krakani race chosen to calm the destructive Kraken - Perrin has been forced to live life on land as a human. His dreams have kept him in contact with Jenny, but despite their undeniable connection, Perrin has kept his distance, refusing to drag her into his miserable existence. But around the world the slumbering Kraken are stirring and now he and Jenny must work together and learn how to use their special dream link to calm the huge beasts before they come fully awake and tear apart the planet.

Liu presents a highly emotional love story between leads Jenny and Perrin while also telling an action packed, multi-layered and unique adventure. The pair work hard to understand the how's and why's of their special connection, while also trying to avoid or appease their various enemies and avert disaster on a global scale. In the Dark of Dreams is another beautifully written and entertaining entry in the Dirk and Steele series.
