Meet Me at the Morgue    by Ross Macdonald Order:  USA  Can Vintage, 2010 (1953) Softcover, e-Book     Reviewed by Mary Ann Smyth Meet Me at the Morgue by Ross MacDonald is an oldie – but a goodie. Originally published in 1953, this kidnapping story has been resurrected for us today. Very good idea. I've always enjoyed MacDonald's work and this one is no exception. Tightly written with not a superfluous word. A plot with an edge and a multitude of surprises. Probation officer Howard Cross becomes involved in the kidnapping of a child. The characters introduced to the readers are iffy at best. There's a World War II war veteran, convicted of manslaughter; a wealthy woman who guards her own secrets; and a blue-eyed woman who appears to have lost her way. The kidnapping escalates into murder and Cross steps in. Although not with the police, he seems to be able to get answers when he asks questions, that the police would not get. A surprise ending is the finale of very fine writing in Meet Me at the Morgue.
